THE CREATION OF THE BAND AND THE DIFFICULTIES WITH ITS NAMING
The group was formed by five finalists of the popular British show Popstars. Initially, the band consisted of Michelle Heaton, Kevin Simm, Tony Lundon, Kelli Young and Jessica Taylor. However, from the moment of its creation, the band faced a problem with its naming. The original name, Liberty, symbolised the freedom the contestants received after the show. It reflected a kind of creative self-realisation. However, that name caused the indignation of another band that was quite popular before. Its representatives filed a lawsuit alleging that the newly formed group was taking advantage of their success. After a series of court hearings and difficulties with documents, the members of Liberty were forced to change their name to Liberty X. Before the name controversy, the band released their first single Thinking It Over in September 2001. Despite criticism and some other issues, the band managed to quickly gain popularity. It is not for nothing they say that show business requires a spectacle. Apparently, people are more interested in behind-stage stories than in a unique voice and melody. However, it should be admitted that the representatives of Liberty X had a great talent for music.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
After such a rapid start, the band was quite active for about six years. Its members constantly brought up new ideas and their songs were top-rated in national ratings. The band’s second studio album, Being Somebody, was released on November 3, 2003. At that time, they managed to sell around 200,000 copies, which was significantly less than the sales of their debut album. Liberty X went on hiatus for a while because of some problems with the record label. In 2005, the group signed a contract with the independent label Unique Corp Records. In October of that year, the third album called X was released. Then the musicians managed to achieve unprecedented success. Their songs became popular not only in Great Britain but also in other European countries. In 2006, people started to rumour about the band’s split, but its members denied all of that. On the contrary, the stars were preparing for the release of a new single in 2007. However, it didn’t happen. Almost every member of the band experienced radical changes. In May 2007, after the tour, the musicians announced that they were ending their career together and their final gig took place at the Wiltshire Crime Stoppers event in September.
The band’s return to the stage happened in 2012. Then the musicians took part in a show, which included performing old songs and telling stories about the path to success of some bands. Initially, it was planned to hold a concert only in London, but the tickets were sold out so quickly that it was decided to make a tour of Great Britain. After several successful performances, the group broke up again. The next reunion took place in 2017. Then Liberty X transformed into an all-female group of three members. They have continued their musical activities since then.
