VOLUNTEER PROJECT OR LONDON’S CENTRE OF FILM ART?

London is one of the most famous cities in the world and cinemas have become its integral part. There are a lot of them in the city. Some of them can boast a rich history, while others impress with amazing architecture and layout. However, there are also those that, at first glance, don’t stand out among such a variety. At the same time, they feature a special atmosphere that makes visitors come back again and again. The Lexi Cinema is one of them. It became extremely popular among residents because of its small size and cosiness. Learn more at london-trend.

HOW DID IT START?

The cinema isn’t old at all, but it always had an extremely important purpose. The Lexi Cinema opened relatively recently. The idea was born in 2006. It was aimed at helping the Sustainability Institute in one of the South African communities. In addition, Londoners got another opportunity to join the beautiful art. The initiators found a building in 2007. In September 2008, the Lexi Cinema opened its doors to visitors. The townspeople immediately loved it. Maybe, the inscription on the building I AM A CINEMA. LOVE ME attracted people as well. In any case, this place can boast of an interesting interior, an incredibly cosy atmosphere and a great love for art. Later, some tourists started to visit it too. Although this cinema isn’t the most famous one in the capital of Great Britain, the guests of the city always return there again. In 2018, the institution was developing at a frantic pace and it needed more than one screen for a large number of future projects and events. It gave rise to the idea to organise a new creative space. Those plans were somewhat disturbed by the pandemic raging in the world at that time. In September 2020, the Lexi Cinema faced new challenges. A fire that broke out in the building caused significant damage. However, despite everything, the cinema managed to overcome all the obstacles. Subsequently, it acquired a second screen, a new modern Lexi Hub and housed many other projects.

THE AIM TO HELP PEOPLE

Lexi is one of the few volunteer cinemas in the world. The institution gives the proceeds from screenings to the Sustainability Institute based in Stellenbosch. In particular, their funding is aimed at supporting children and youth in South Africa. The programme is designed to provide food and water as well as to develop a kindergarten and an early learning centre for children from farmers’ families. Thus, you can rescue many people just by enjoying the art.

PROGRAMME AND EVENTS

In general, the cinema’s programme includes films of various genres. However, since the Lexi Cinema is a creative space that has a slightly bigger purpose than just entertainment, a number of other interesting events are very often held there as well. For example, in the cinema, you can have a cosy evening with friends eating delicious food and watching a great movie. Lexi holds more serious events too. It screens documentaries that encourage deeper reflection and further action to improve the quality of life in your community. Sometimes, its visitors have the opportunity to attend interviews with famous directors, critics and scientists. Moreover, the cinema even opened a gallery for local artists. It is worth saying that the Lexi Cinema will impress everyone interested in art.
