WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE CINEMA?
This cinema has hosted a wide variety of events throughout the history of its existence. Its unique atmosphere was made by foreign films, adult movies and numerous charity screenings. The cinema changed its name several times. Each of the names had a unique and deep meaning. Initially, the building housed the Kingsland Palace. It was one of the most popular cinemas in London at the time. In 1915, the building was transformed into the Kingsland Empire. It was a cinema with one screen. The result of the architect’s work was quite impressive. However, it is worth noting that the cinema’s interior looked more like a classical theatre due to the similar planning and decoration. It featured five side arches, a domed tower and a proscenium with Ionic columns topped with a frieze.
In 1936, Capital & Provincial News Theatres purchased the cinema. In the following year, it underwent reconstruction and opened its doors to a more modern audience. Soon, London and the whole world were shaken by terrible and large-scale events, the Second World War. It also affected the cultural life of the capital of Great Britain. In 1941, the cinema was heavily damaged as a result of another London bombing. Later, it was restored, and in 1958, it was given a new name, the Classic Cartoon Theatre.
