Yet, even here, a few stand out as uniquely captivating. What happens when you start taking absolute nonsense seriously? Can silliness be turned into something spectacular? The answers lie in the rise of Mischief Theatre. This troupe certainly knows how to achieve success while keeping a massive smile on their faces. Watching them makes you want to pack in the day job and follow your passion. So, what makes their work so distinct, and what draws audiences in their droves? Read on at london-trend.

First Steps to Success

The Mischief Theatre story began during what is, for many, the most vibrant and hectic chapter of life. In 2008, a group of drama students at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) decided to create something entirely fresh. Henry Lewis, Henry Shields, and Jonathan Sayer founded the theatre company, initially making a name for themselves with improvised comedy gigs. The troupe quickly expanded to include other students from their course. In July 2008, they staged their very first scripted show, Let’s See What Happens. While it was warmly received by audiences, their breakthrough triumph was still on the horizon.

Everything That Went Wrong

That debut production highlighted a definitive hallmark of Mischief Theatre: their brilliantly witty titles. While their first show featured a simple, catchy name that piqued curiosity, the actors were just getting started. Their crown jewel would become The Play That Goes Wrong. This hit production allowed the company to raise the stakes, incorporating complex physical comedy, stage combat, and intricately timed choreography. At its core, the concept was to show the audience the chaotic reality of backstage life rather than a polished, perfect performance. It won the hearts of theatergoers everywhere, playing on our natural urge to peek behind the curtain and see what actors get up to when things fall apart. Following its roaring West End premiere, the show was even selected to feature in the Royal Variety Performance in 2015.

Audiences fell so completely in love with the format that it spawned a festive spin-off, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. This production centers on a fictional, hopelessly inept amateur dramatics society attempting to stage the classic children’s tale. Audiences get to watch the real-time unraveling of backstage romances, the director’s desperate bids to maintain order, and bitter cast rivalries. It is a hilarious parody of the actual mishaps that can plague any theatrical production.

The runaway success of the Goes Wrong franchise catapulted Mischief Theatre into mainstream stardom, catching the attention of the BBC. In 2017, the broadcasting corporation commissioned them to create a festive television special, A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong. This partnership grew even further with their hit prime-time television series, The Goes Wrong Show.

Future Developments

Sharp wit, incredible improvisational skills, and an unwavering commitment to bringing pure joy and energy to audiences have kept Mischief Theatre growing ever since its inception. Admittedly, the global pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to staging live theater across 2019 and 2020. Yet, true to form, the troupe found clever workarounds to keep the show on the road. From August through late September, they moved operations outdoors, performing open-air improv comedy shows. When tighter lockdown restrictions returned, they seamlessly shifted to digital spaces, launching Mischief Movie Night In to stream live comedy into people’s living rooms. Ultimately, the company offers a welcome escape from the grind of daily life, inviting us to shake off our worries and step into a world of timeless, brilliantly unpredictable comedy.

Some stories are genuinely inspiring, and London is a city overflowing with them.
