His plans, however, hit a snag when the school was unexpectedly sold. Undeterred, Roberts decided to strike out on his own and established the London School of Film Technique. His vision was heavily inspired by the post-WWII Eastern European practice of opening film schools, as he believed the UK film industry desperately needed systematic, thorough education. At the time, the only path into the profession was the traditional apprenticeship model.

In April 1957, the very first classes of the London School of Film Technique took place above a grocer’s shop on Electric Avenue in Brixton. Initially, the curriculum was a six-month diploma course, offered both day and evening, with the option to extend for another six months. Under the subsequent leadership of Robert Dunbar, the course was extended to 33 weeks and eventually to two years. As student numbers soared, the original premises quickly became too small. In 1963, the school moved to the West End, first to Charlotte Street and then, in 1966, to its permanent home on Shelton Street. The name also changed: in 1969, the institution became the London Film School, a name that reflected its broader educational focus beyond purely technical training.

The early 1970s brought a period of great difficulty. A drop in student enrolment, new competition from the recently established National Film School, and economic hardship led to severe financial instability. As a result, the London Film School was liquidated. But the story didn’t end there. Thanks to the remarkable efforts of its faculty and students, the school reopened in 1975 under a new name: the London International Film School. It was granted charitable status, and every student automatically became a member of the company with the right to participate in its governance.

In 2000, Ben Gibson took over as director and, under his leadership, the school reverted to its historic name, the London Film School (LFS). Gibson gradually phased out diploma courses in favour of full-fledged master’s programmes. These programmes were significantly updated to reflect modern times, incorporating the latest cinematic advancements and the rapid shift from analogue to digital technology. The school also began to diversify its offerings. A master’s degree in screenwriting was launched in 2005, and in 2014, a programme in international film business was created in partnership with the University of Exeter.

In November 2023, Chris Auty, formerly head of production at the National Film and Television School, took the helm as director. One of his first key decisions was to open state-of-the-art facilities on Parker Street, which have become the main hub of the school’s activities. The historic Shelton Street building, however, retained its importance, now serving as a space for short courses and specialised workshops. In addition to expanding its infrastructure, LFS has enriched its educational portfolio. In 2025, it announced the launch of two new one-year master’s programmes: one in film production and another in film marketing.

Study Abroad

LFS’s Enduring Influence and Recognition

The London Film School is widely regarded as one of the most influential film institutions in the world. For nearly seven decades, it has served as a platform where young filmmakers can find their unique creative voice, hone their professional skills, and engage directly with the dynamic UK and international film industries.
