Insomnia and secretly watching late-night arthouse films on BBC2 shaped a unique way of seeing the world for him. He first studied Art History at the University of Manchester from 1985 to 1988 before earning a Master of Fine Arts from the prestigious Goldsmiths, University of London, between 1992 and 1994.

Since the early 1990s, Chodzko has been a consistent presence at international exhibitions, inviting audiences to interact with art in new ways. He started developing these ideas in early projects like Transmitter (1990) and The God Look-Alike Contest (1991), where he anticipated the mechanics of future digital social networks. In 1996, the critic Kevin Jackson distinguished Chodzko from the “Britart” or Young British Artists generation, highlighting his “thoughtful” approach which contrasted with the eye-catching but often superficial “shock tactics” of many of his contemporaries.

Over time, Chodzko’s practice began to embrace collective experiences, folklore, and rituals. For the Frieze Art Fair in 2004, he developed the project Nightshift, a map of alternative routes through the exhibition based on the nocturnal paths of animals, from wolves to deer. Another landmark work, White Magic (2005), involved an unexpected act of exchange: the artist bought all the green clothes from a Kent charity shop and replaced them with red items from an American second-hand store. In doing so, he created a system of giving that ran counter to the logic of commercial gain.

The theme of remote yet intimate social connections, which Chodzko had been exploring for decades, gained a new dimension in his 2013 work, A Room for Laarni, Image Moderator. In this piece, he delved into the global dynamics of digital networks, focusing on a Filipino image moderator who controls the visual content on a Western European platform for teenagers. That same year, critic Dan Fox described Chodzko’s work as an example of “British occult behaviour experiments” that test the boundaries of the public sphere, while Jonathan Jones of The Guardian called him a “master of provocation”.

In 2023, Chodzko presented Growing a Dream Ecology, a project dedicated to dreams as a space for intercultural dialogue and psychological well-being. This work was a collaborative exploration of night dreams with various Malaysian communities. As part of the project, Chodzko created the new video piece, Jengkuan, which was inspired by a chance discovery in Kent: an archive of amateur 35mm slides that documented the development of Kuala Lumpur from the 1960s to the 1980s. In the piece, the old photographs are brought to life by a narrative that presents them as fragments of a dream.

www.adamchodzko.com

The Acclaim and Significance of Adam Chodzko’s Video Art

Adam Chodzko’s work stands out not just for its innovative artistic forms but also for its ability to reveal deep-seated cultural and social processes. Since the early 1990s, his art has been regularly featured in international exhibitions and biennials, from Tate St Ives and MAMBo to the Athens, Istanbul, and Venice Biennales. His recognition is also confirmed by a number of prestigious awards.
