Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, it drew global attention. The show so brilliantly recreates the atmosphere and character of the UK’s capital that most viewers will undoubtedly want to see the city for themselves. Throughout its history in cinema, London has been portrayed as mystical, crime-ridden, and even futuristic. In this series, however, it is sophisticated, elegant, sometimes broken, but always incredible. So, where exactly was the series filmed, and what secrets do these locations hold? Find out more at london-trend.

Bringing London’s Iconic Buildings to Life

London has always been renowned for its stunning architecture, and in “The Crown,” its various buildings and monuments play a starring role. The centrepiece of both the series and the real Royal Family’s life is Buckingham Palace. It’s more than just a beautiful building; it represents the Queen’s most significant decisions, her relationship with the public, and the dynamics within her family. However, filming inside the actual palace wasn’t possible, as securing permission is notoriously difficult. To replicate its iconic interiors and exteriors, scenes were shot in other grand buildings. For instance, many of the Royal Family’s balcony appearances were filmed at the Old Royal Naval College, whose architecture and grounds perfectly mirror the monarch’s official residence. Lancaster House also served as a double. Built in 1825, this building was a known favourite of Queen Victoria, and its beautiful interiors helped to successfully recreate a magnificent atmosphere for the series. Scenes filmed here have featured across multiple seasons.

The Lyceum Theatre also helped to capture the city’s different time periods and cultural shifts. In the first season, it was the setting for a gala evening, where viewers saw a young Queen Elizabeth and her husband. The theatre makes a poignant return in the fifth season, this time as the venue where Princess Diana watches a performance of “Swan Lake” shortly before her death. Another fascinating location is Goldsmiths’ Hall. This was where the iconic scene of Princess Diana roller-skating, supposedly through the corridors of Buckingham Palace, was filmed.

Some of London’s architectural gems are so unique they can even stand in for locations in other countries. In the first season, for example, Eltham Palace played the part of Government House in Bermuda, a role made possible by its Art Deco style and architectural flexibility. The palace was also used for several other unique scenes, including those set in Queen Elizabeth II’s quarters on board the royal yacht.

Unconventional Choices

“The Crown” was filmed in numerous locations, with the crew drawing inspiration from sites across the UK and beyond. Yet, London itself proved versatile enough to stand in for other countries. Dartmouth House became the perfect double for the Ritz in Paris, Princess Diana’s final destination. On another occasion, a scene featuring President Clinton was filmed in the Docklands, with this part of East London transformed into Chicago for the shoot. So, when you wander through the UK’s capital, you can visit these locations and experience the city’s incredible versatility firsthand.

The series “The Crown” has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide, even those with little prior interest in British culture or the Royal Family.
