Donald Crisp was the youngest child in the big family. Although he managed to get an education at a local school, he started working at a young age. Not much is known about Donald’s further education because some of the proven facts don’t quite match the information that the director told himself. We can say that Donald Crisp’s professional career began on a ship. In 1906, during a trip to the United States of America, opera impresario John Fisher noticed Donald’s vocal talent. At that time, the young man couldn’t even imagine the opportunities that awaited him in the new country. His first year in New York was marked by professional activity at the Grand Opera, and a year later, Donald Crisp became a director.

FURTHER SUCCESS IN CINEMA AND OTHER AREAS OF THE DIRECTOR’S LIFE

After the director came to the USA, his life changed drastically. However, in addition to creating movies, he often took part in filming as an actor. In 1915, Donald played the role of General Grant in the film The Birth of a Nation. In total, from 1908 to 1930, he appeared in more than 100 silent films, but most of his roles were small or episodic. Interestingly, Donald permanently lived in the USA, but during the First World War, he returned to his native country and served in British intelligence.

In total, Donald Crisp made approximately 70 different films throughout his career as a director. One of the most famous was created in 1924. It was the American comedy The Navigator, which conquered viewers from many countries. Don Q, Son of Zorro, which was filmed in 1925, also gained considerable popularity. However, Donald Crisp refused to work as a director in 1930. That type of activity was too exhausting for him. In addition, the management of the film studios was constantly consulting him on the cast (usually they tried to promote their relatives and friends). Another important event took place in Donald’s life in 1930. He became a US citizen. After that, he completely devoted himself to acting. The next ten years of his life were very eventful. During that period, Donald Crisp collaborated with the most famous actors, embodied the most unique ideas and performed the most diverse roles. He became a versatile supporting actor who could perfectly render both positive and negative character traits. However, the Second World War brought changes. Then Donald Crisp began serving in the US Army Reserve. Still, he continued to act in films until his death.
