The guests of the country also want to get acquainted with local interesting and attractive theatrical traditions. Gillian Lynne Theatre is one of London’s gems. Why is it so popular? The history of the theatre’s development began with the emergence of the Mogul Saloon at the site. In 1851, the place was renamed Middlesex Music Hall. It became very popular at that time and attracted more and more people every month. Apparently, that became one of the reasons for reconstructing the building. The works were completed in 1892. In 1911, the place was opened under the name New Middlesex Theatre of Varieties. However, art, like life, never stops developing. So, in 1919, the theatre was renovated again. It can be called the second birthday of the institution because the theatre changed not only its external and internal appearance but also global concepts and the general format of professional activity. In addition, it was renamed Winter Garden Theatre. Since that time, many well-known dramas, musicals and other interesting performances have been staged here. Some of the most successful of them were The Cabaret Girl, The Beauty Prize, The Vagabond King, Follow a Star (with Sophie Tucker), Walk This Way (with Gracie Fields), The Water Gypsies, Love on the Dole, Witness for the Prosecution and Hotel Paradiso.

However, the theatre faced several problems as well. One of the most difficult moments in its history was its closure in 1959. The next few years were difficult too. The building was literally crumbling. Despite all of this, the theatre came back to life in 1972. The Gillian Lynne Theatre was opened in a newly built building. It symbolically staged a number of unique productions. Such grandiose events with many famous actors in the main roles not only emphasised the revival of the institution but also attracted lots of people. Later, the theatre was repeatedly mentioned as the birthplace of extraordinary and innovative musical productions. The institution continues to develop and change even in our time. For example, in 2018, it was renamed the Gillian Lynne Theatre after the pioneering choreographer and the theatre director.

WHAT DOES THE MODERN THEATRE OFFER?

Theatre representatives try to create comfortable conditions for visitors.
